I am trying to upgrade my early 2011 MacBook Pro to High Sierra. I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.6.8, I was previously using Ubuntu, but now when I go to the App Store to download El Capitan (used as a stepping stone to get to High Sierra) and click "GET" nothing happens. Not long after upgrading to Mac OS 10.9 the Mac OS X App Store stopped loading on my Macbook Air. Starting the app took several minutes and once the window actually came up it was empty. Clicking buttons in the App Store window did nothing. macOS High Sierra update didn’t show up in Mac App Store ‘Updates” tab at all (nor “Purchases”), though Apple had an official news feed stating the update was available as a free update four days ago. When I open the app store, it shows genius results, purchased apps & updates, but only shows a blank screen under ‘Featured’ & ‘Charts ... Open the App Store app on your Mac. Click Updates in the App Store toolbar. Use the Update buttons to download and install any updates listed. When the App Store shows no more updates, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are up to date. That includes Safari, iTunes, iBooks, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and FaceTime.

not sure if you had the same problem as i, but after i updated from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8, all apps seem to work except itunes, what i figured out was that a compatibility issue with the library.itl doc in the music folder, delete that file and relaunch, you will lose all your playlist though, but at least your up to date and working.
